Background/Target Information
Leptin is a 167-amino acid peptide hormone encoded by the obesity gene (OB) and secreted by adipocytes. It is involved in regulating food intake, energy expenditure, and adiposity through hypothalamic leptin receptors. Leptin promotes hematopoiesis, and influences pubertal development and fetal growth; it is involved in obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Serum leptin levels correlate with body fat amount.
