Background Information The hnRNP C proteins (C1/C2) are nuclear pre-mRNA-binding proteins that belong to the large RNP motif family of RNA-binding proteins. The proteins encoded by this gene act as a tetramer and are involved in the assembly of 40S hnRNP particles. The hnRNPs are RNA binding proteins that complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins aassociate with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing and other aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. In vivo, hnRNP C proteins have been found to interact with Grb2.

The hnRNPs are RNA binding proteins and they complex with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). May play a role in the early steps of spliceosome assembly and pre-mRNA splicing. Interacts with poly-U tracts in the 3'-UTR or 5'-UTR of mRNA and modulates the stability and the level of translation of bound mRNA molecules. 

SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Tetramer composed of 3 copies of isoform C1 and 1 copy of isoform C2.
