IL-18 has been shown to be a pro-inflammatory cytokine that induces interferon-gamma. IL-18 has also been found to have the ability to activate nuclear factor-kappaB (NFkB), express Fas ligand, induce CC and CXC chemokines, and also has been found to increase the production of viable human immunodeficiency virus. IL-18 has been linked to syndromes displaying symptoms of chronic low-levels of inflammation. IL-18 also seems to have some control over homeostasis and behavior in the central nervous system as well as neuroinflammatory activity.

Immunohistochemistry
Application Notes
Immunohistochemistry Analysis: 1:250 from a previous lot detected IL-18 in human tonsil tissue.
Immunohistochemistry Analysis: 1:250 from a previous lot detected IL-18 in inflamed skin and normal human spleen tissues.
Biological Information
Immunogen
KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to human IL-18.
Clone
12E7.1
Concentration
Please refer to the Certificate of Analysis for the lot-specific concentration.
The protein encoded by this gene is a proinflammatory cytokine. This cytokine can induce the IFN-gamma production of T cells. The combination of this cytokine and IL12 has been shown to inhibit IL4 dependent IgE and IgG1 production, and enhance IgG2a production of B cells. IL-18 binding protein (IL18BP) can specifically interact with this cytokine, and thus negatively regulate its biological activity. [provided by RefSeq].
FUNCTION: Augments natural killer cell activity in spleen cells and stimulates interferon gamma production in T-helper type I cells.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted.
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the IL-1 family.
