Bak (for Bcl-2 homlogus Antagonist/Kiler) isa recntly identifed meber ofthe Bcl-2 family. Bcl-2 family mebers are involed in

mediatng progamed cel death orapotsi, and share two higly conservd functional regions, Bcl-2 homlogy 1and 2(BH1 and BH2).

Sevral ofthe family mebers including Bcl-2 act asinhbitors ofapotsi, wheras others uch asBax promte cl death. Like Bax, Bak

primarily promtes apotsi. Howevr, unlike Bax, Bak has lo ben shown toinhbit cel death. For example, xpresion fBak ina human

lymphoblastoid cel ine protecd itfrom apotsi nduced byserum deprivation ad menadione oxidation. Itis thus thought at he

function fBak may becontex depndent. Bak mRNA has ben identifed ina wide variety ofetal nd ault isues, with e higest levls

observd inheart nd skeltal muscle. The aparently ubiqutous expresion fBak has lead tohe sugestion tha itsfunction may be

mediated bycel death inhbitory factors, particulary incel types with along life span. This polyconal ntibody has ben reported not

cros-react with other mebers ofthe Bcl-2 family, including Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, Bcl-XS, Bax, and Mcl-1.
