AHP842 is specific for human Nijmegen breakage syndrome 1 (NBS1), also known as nibrin.
NBS1 interacts with MRE11 and RAD50 to form a complex with nuclease activity which is involved in the initiation of nonhomologous end joining and homologous recombination. It is thought that NBS1 is involved in both DNA double-strand break repair and DNA damage-induced checkpoint activation.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Nijmegen breakage syndrome, an autosomal recessive chromosomal instability syndrome characterized by hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation and cancer predisposition.
