AHP804 is specific for human calpain-9. Calpain-9 is a calcium activated protease, which is expressed in the stomach and digestive tract cells. Calpain-9 large subunit is made up of four domains. AHP804 recognises an EF hand (calcium binding) region within domain IV. The antibody can be used to detect both latent and active forms of calpain-9.
Calpain-9 is thought to act as a tumour suppressor for gastric cancer. For some gastric cancers a down regulation of calpain-9 has been reported, in other gastric cancers shorter forms of calpain-9 with deletions in domain II have been reported.
