AHP2086 recognises Phencyclidine (PCP), a synthetic drug originally developed as an anaesthetic and analgesic. It was withdrawn from use due to its hallucinogenic properties and the unpredictable behavioural reactions that followed use. It is an NMDA receptor antagonist that is still used in veterinary medicine as an anaesthetic.
PCP became a popular recreational drug in the 1960’s, taken for its hallucinogenic properties. It can be smoked with marijuana or tobacco, snorted, injected intravenously or taken orally. Effects can be erratic and varies by dosage. Violent (including self-injury) or other bizarre behaviour is common. Overdose intoxication may lead to hypertension, seizures, coma and respiratory depression.
