AHP2007 recognisesLevo-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM), a synthetic opioid similar to methadone. LAAM is metabolised to the active demethylated nor-LAAM, which is further metabolised to another active metabolite dinor-LAAM. Both of these metabolites are more potent than LAAM, making LAAM a long-acting drug. It is used for the management of opioid dependency, as an alternative to methadone or buprenorphine. It does, however, have potentially life-threatening adverse effects, such as ventricular rhythm disorders.
