AHP1544 recognises rat amyloid precursor protein (APP), a type I integral membrane protein with a relatively large extracellular domain and a short intracellular domain. In mammals, APP is expressed ubiquitously. Its function is poorly understood, but the overall structure suggests a function as a receptor or growth factor, even though it has also been implicated in pro- and anti-apoptotic functions. Its most substantiated function is in synaptic formation and repair. APP is most commonly studied as the precursor molecule of amyloid beta, a 39 – 42 amino acid peptide that precipitates in the plaques of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
APP also inhibits Notch signaling through it’s interaction with Numb.
