Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone produced from cholesterol and secreted by several organs including the adrenal glands. It is the precursor of male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens). DHEAS is the sulphated version of DHEA. This conversion is reversibly catalysed by sulphotransferase primarily in the adrenals, the liver, and small intestines. In the blood, most DHEA is found as DHEAS with levels that are about 300 times higher than free DHEA.
